What is the role of the Teaching Assistant at Novelly?
Novelly’s youth authorship program, the Rising Voices Collective, is a two-part creative writing and publishing program for talented and underrepresented youth writers aged 14-19 from around the United States. The Teaching Assistant (TA) is the most important part of the youth authors' experience in Part 1 of the program.
During the summer creative writing intensive (Part 1), writers attend weekly 30-minute 1:1 coaching sessions with the TA and participate in regular writing sessions, community-building, discussion sections, and lessons with their cohort led by the TA. The summer program culminates in each of the students publishing a 5,000+ word novella, and our alumni have told us consistently that their TA is the reason they were able to finish.
The Teaching Assistant is involved only in the summer program and their work will take place in 3 phases. From June 10 to July 5 (Phase I), they will co-design the curriculum for the summer creative writing intensive with Novelly’s Managing Director. From July 8 to August 2 (Phase II), they will execute the summer creative writing intensive and oversee 5 youth authors with Novelly’s Managing Director. From August 5 to August 16 (Phase III), they will evaluate and improve the program materials with Novelly’s Managing Director.
